The Department of Art & Art History at Stanford University presents “Notes from the Field: Recent Photographs by Richard Gordon” on view from July 3 to August 5, with a reception on July 12, 5 - 7 PM, at the Thomas Welton Stanford Art Gallery. Curated by Professor of Photography Joel Leivick, the exhibition consists of 35 new color photographs from Richard Gordon’s most recent series exploring ideas surrounding communication and interconnectedness in the contemporary world. It also includes a short essay by acclaimed photographer and book artist Jason Francisco. A Chicago native, Richard Gordon has photographed all over America for more than 40 years. Combining utter seriousness with wry humor and bemusement, his informed observations have been known to his wide circle of friends and correspondents, and the larger world of art, for decades. “Gordon is locked in a game of wits with the public as it conceals within itself an infrastructure of unsolicited private observation, what amounts to an omnipresent regime of legitimated social distrust,” states Francisco. Gordon has taught at City College of San Francisco, Stanford University Continuing Studies, and other San Francisco bay area colleges. He is the author of Meta Photographs 1978, One More for the Road 1996, American Surveillance 2009 and a number of limited edition, hand made artist's books. His works are in the permanent collections of SFMOMA, J. Paul Getty Museum, Corcoran Gallery of American Art, Rosenwald Rare Book Collection, Library of Congress, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and Cantor Center for the Visual Arts, Stanford University Special Collections and others. VISITOR INFORMATION: Thomas Welton Stanford Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 AM–5 PM, and Saturday and Sunday, 1-5 PM. Gallery is closed on July 4. Admission is free. The Gallery is located in the Stanford campus, off Palm Drive at 419 Lasuen Mall. Parking is free after 4 PM and all day on weekends. Information: (650) 723-2842, http://art.stanford.edu.
