Stanford professor John Bender will discuss his new book, "Ends of Enlightenment," in which he explores three realms of eighteenth-century European innovation that remain active to this day: the realist novel, philosophical thought, and the physical sciences, especially human anatomy. Commentary will be provided by UC Santa Barbara professor William B. Warner. John Bender is the Jean G. and Morris M. Doyle Professor in Interdisciplinary Studies, Professor of English and Comparative Literature, and research affiliate of the The Europe Center. His research and teaching focus on the 18th century in England and France. His special concerns include the relationship of literature to visual arts, to philosophy and science, as well as to the sociology of literature and critical theory. William Warner is a professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His central interests include eighteenth century British and American literature and cultural studies, the novel, literary and cultural theory, media studies, and law and literature (free speech and censorship.)
