Recombinations is Stanford's university-wide seminar series at the intersection of medicine, the humanities and the arts and is hosting "Literature and Medicine at Life's End, a seminar conversation with Sunita Puri and Alvan A. Ikoku concerning Richard Selzer's Mercy narratives and the place of literature in decision-making at end-of-life." Sunita Puri, MD is a clinical fellow in palliative medicine at Stanford University Hospital and department of medicine. She earned her BA in cultural anthropology from Yale, a masters in history of medicine at Oxford (while under Rhodes fellowship), and her MD from UCSF and Berkeley. Alvan A Ikoku, MD, PhD is a Mellon fellow in the humanities at Stanford Humanities Center and department of comparative literature. He earned his AB in human biology from Stanford, a masters in history of medicine at Oxford (also while under Rhodes fellowship), his MD from Harvard and PhD in comparative literature at Columbia. It is highly recommended that attendees read Richard Selzer's "Mercy" beforehand, and if possible, "A Question of Mercy." Please contact jmgeno@stanford.edu for copies of the readings.
