Location: HP Auditorium (Room B-01), Gates Computer Science Building

Earl Martin Valencia, CEO of IdeaSpace, describes the largest start-up company incubator in the Philippines and discusses recent trends in the ecosystem for entrepreneurship in that country.  Earl launched the IdeaSpace Foundation in 2012 with the support and backing of prominent Filipino CEOs, such as Manuel V. Pangilinan, Chairman of PLDT, Philippine’s largest telecommunications company. Although most of the 700 initial applicants were in mobile consumer business and digital media, IdeaSpace instead channeled its commitments to addressing the most important needs of emerging markets.  Their first batch of incubatees included ideas in water purification systems (using nanotechnology), an energy startup with a more efficient windmill design, and a company developing prosthetic joints for Asia markets.  Earl was previously Business Incubation Manager at Cisco's Emerging Technology Group.  He has also worked with venture capital firms and as a Senior Systems Engineer with Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems.  He received the BSc in EE summa cum laude from Boston University, a Master's in Systems Engineering from Cornell, and an MBA from Stanford's Graduate School of Business.  This is the fourth session in our weekly series of public seminars on "Entrepreneurship in Asian High-Tech Industries."
